WIN-It-Wednesday: Rudi’s Gluten-Free Bakery NEW Tortillas

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

I just love it when one of my all-time favorite gluten-free brands comes out with new products. Like last Spring when Rudi’s came out with their hamburger and hotdog rolls. THAT was a treat!

That’s why I was so excited after trying the newest edition to  Rudi’s Gluten-Free Breads family of  products: TORTILLLAS!

These tortillas are delicious. Soft, pliable and dying to be wrapped around your favorite fillings.

And if right about now you are thinking to yourself: “What’s the big deal? There are other gluten-free tortillas on the market” – Get THIS! … They come in flavors… yes FLAVORS! Besides the versatile Plain Tortillas, there are also 2 other varieties: Spinach and Fiesta. They all top out at 5 grams of fiber per serving, and are “made with stuff you can pronounce and ingredients you recognize.”

The Fiesta Tortilla is made with whole grains spiced up with bell pepper, jalapeno, onion and garlic flavors. This spicy wrap is calling Mexican food and spice-addicts everywhere. Hola Fiesta!

The Spinach Tortilla is perfect for the veggie lovers in all of us. Pack it with a soft spreadable herbed cheese (or cheese substitute) and layer it with fresh cut veggies; or enjoy sliced turkey, tomatoes and cheddar for a traditional lunchtime treat.

And let’s not forget the Plain Tortilla… although not as fancy and spiced up as the others this wrap is the most versatile of the round-up. I love to make breakfast sandwich wraps… stuffed with egg, ham, and a slice of good old American cheese. A perfect wake-me-up!

I am so thrilled that Rudi’s Gluten-Free Bakery will be sponsoring the next two week’s Win-it-Wednesday’s on BeFreeForMe.com!

A total of FOUR (Yes… 4!) BeFreeForMe members will be selected to win a gift pack of Rudi’s Gluten-Free Tortillas – one of each of the three flavor. Two winners will be randomly selected from the entries received before Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 11:59 PM EST, and two more winners will be randomly selected to win from the entries received between Wednesday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 11:59PM. SO – make sure you enter to win two times!

How can you WIN?
EASY!

Reply to this blog and tell me what Rudi’s Tortilla variety (Plain, Spinach or Fiesta) sounds the best to you, and what you would wrap up in it (Me? I’m sticking with my Breakfast Wrap mentioned above!)

Good luck, Thank you Rudi’s for the wraps and rolls …and as always,
Be Free!

P.S. Also, make sure you check out the campaign that Rudi’s is holding on their Facebook page . It’s called Spread the Bread. When you download a $1.00 off coupon, you can designate what National Celiac Organization you want Rudi’s to donate a $1.00 too. It’s a great promotion – so check it out!

WIN-It-Wednesday: Plentils… by Enjoy Life Foods

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

Plentils are the new chip that has plenty of good. And none of the not so good.

The newest addition to the Enjoy Life family, Plentils, join their product line-up that are all gluten-free and free from the top most common allergens.

Free of gluten, dairy, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, fish and shellfish; as well as free of casein, potato, sesame and sulfites. These chips are full of flavor and crunch.

So what are Plentils made of? Lentils of course! And plenty of them. Lentils are a pulse that are low in calories and high in nutrition. They also are high in iron, B vitamins and protein. Talk about a super pulse!

I really like Plentils since they are low in calories and tasty too. That’s why their tagline line is “Better-For-You-Chip”. Only 130 calories and 6 grams of fat per serving, Plentils have 40% less fat than the leading potato chip – Plentils add a nice crunch to lunch or when you need something crunchy to munch. Got that? =)

Plentils come in some fantastic flavors too: Light Sea Salt, Dill & Sour Cream, Garlic & Parmesan and, my favorite, Margherita Pizza. They are just working into grocers across the country, so start looking for them in your area.

But we have a sneak peak of these chips since Plentils is the sponsor of this WIN-It-Wednesday on BeFreeForMe.com! Four (Yes! 4) lucky winners will win a two-pack of these delicious new, Better-For-You, chips.

How can you win?
Easy!

Reply to this blog and tell us your favorite “Better For You” tip or trick. Me? Instead of drinking soda (tonic, pop, etc.!) I drink a splash of juice in seltzer water… delicious and low in calories.

Two (2) winners will be randomly selected from the entries received before Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 11:59 PM EST, and two (2) more winners will be randomly selected to win from the entries received between Wednesday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 11:59PM. SO – make sure you enter to win two times!

Good luck, keep it crunching… and as always…

WIN-It-Wednesday: “Allergy-Friendly Food for Families – 120 Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Soy-Free Recipes Everyone Will Love” Cookbook

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

So many BeFreeForMe members, plus many other folks that I chat with when out on the road, are overcoming the challenge of having multiple food allergies in the same household.

So many families are  living with multiple food allergies, celiac disease and other food intolerances and sensitivities. In these cases, mealtimes can be challenging, at best.

That is why my eyes lit up when I enthusiastically started paging through the advance copy of the  “Allergy-Friendly Food for Families – 120 Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Soy-Free Recipes Everyone Will Love” Cookbook when it came across my desk several weeks ago.

And since that time, I have been so excited to share this cookbook – which covers not just one or two, but the five most common allergens in kids – with the BeFreeForMe.com members. “Allergy-Friendly Food for Families” is now available on Amazon.com which is now available  for pre-order with delivery on April 10, 2012!

I like that this cookbook covers recipes for the three major meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). It seems that so many cookbooks don’t offer a lot of breakfast recipes, which we all know can be the most challenging when living with food allergies and a gluten-free diet, but this cookbook offers tons of new & innovative family-friendly breakfast ideas (Some of my favorites? Carrot Cake Breakfast Cookies, Blueberry Corncakes, and Quinoa Maple Crunch).   There is also a whole chapter of recipes dedicated to Snacks (yes… snacks!) as well as Desserts and… get this…. a whole chapter on Party Ideas!

I found the chapter dedicated to Party Ideas ingenious! This section is full of recipes – such as Carnival Corn Dogs, Soft Pretzels with Honey Mustard Sauce and a Giant Cookie Cake –  that are all perfect for anyone hosting (or needing recipes ideas) for a birthday party where kids with allergens are attendees.

This cookbook is from the editors of KIWI, the premier magazine about raising families the natural and organic way. The magazine is published bi-monthly and is full of ideas and ways to support green, healthy choices when it comes to food, family life and fun. Check out their Facebook page and the join them on Twitter too, and get a feel for what KIWI’s all about. I think you’ll all really enjoy the content.

As you can imagine, I was so happy when I found out that this WIN-It-Wednesday on BeFreeforMe.com was to be sponsored by KIWI Magazine and the “Allergy-Friendly Food for Families” Cookbook.

How can you win?

Lions, and Tigers and Bears! Oh My! Animal Cookies make an appearance in many of my favorite childhood memories. And thanks to Kinnikinnick, kids that are on a gluten-free, dairy-free and nut-free diet can still experience the flavor and allure of Animal Cookies too.

WIN-It-Wednesday: The Dairy-Free & Gluten-Free Kitchen Cookbook by Denise Jardine

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

It seems that everywhere I turn, folks that are on a gluten-free diet, are also are on a dairy-free diet too. Talk about a double-whammy. Statistics now support the connection between dairy- and gluten-related health issues, and more and more people are being diagnosed with BOTH gluten and dairy issues.

And Denise Jardine is one of those people.

Denise, a nutritional educator who wrote “Recipes for Dairy-Free Living”, found out that she too also had gluten-related issues, after eighteen years of living with a dairy allergy.

So back to the kitchen and keyboard went Jardine.  And this time she’s cooked up a gem of a cookbook for those on a gluten-free and dairy-free diet: “The Dairy-Free & Gluten-Free Kitchen… 150 delicious dishes for every meal, every day”.

This cookbook is full of easily approachable recipes that are straightforward to read and prepare; however, the recipes themselves yield those “you-shouldn’t-have-slaved-in-the-kitchen-all-day-for-me”  comments from your family, friends and guests. Some of the recipes that caught my eye, and put a grumble in my stomach include Coconut-Lime Seafood Stew, Peppered Pork Tenderloin in Mustard Cream Sauce and German Apple Souffle a la Mode. Dinner party anyone?

And if you have other allergies or watching your sugar intake, no worries, Jardine has you covered. Similar to BeFreeForMe.com recipes, the recipes in this cookbook has a coding system that indicates other common allergens the recipe is free of.

What a perfect cookbook for BeFreeForMe.com readers! Which is why I was thrilled that this Win-It-Wednesday on BeFreeForMe was going to be sponsored by The Dairy-Free & Gluten-Free Kitchen Cookbook.

A total of two  BeFreeForMe members will be selected to win a copy of this cookbook. One (1) winners will be randomly selected from the entries received before Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 11:59 PM EST, and one (1) more winners will be randomly selected to win from the entries received between Wednesday, March 14 and Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 11:59PM. Reply to this blog and tell us what being “free” means to you. A very open ended question, I know! (Me? Here are a few things: A clear conscious; recognizing all the good in my world and then having that appreciative feeling that totally makes my day; and walking on a beach early in the morning). How easy is that? Now it’s your turn…

WIN-It-Wednesday: Maria & Ricardo’s Gluten-Free Tortilla’s – 50 WINNERS!

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Yes folks… you read it right! This WIN-It-Wednesday on BeFreeForMe is going to have 50 WINNERS! An all time record-breaking amount of prizes and chances to win!
The sponsor of this WIN-It-Wednesday is one of my all-time favorite companies too… Maria & Ricardo’s Gluten-Free Tortillas.

If you’re craving to make an authentic street vendor style Burrito that is bursting at the seams with grilled chicken, beef, guacamole, beans, rice and chipotle seasoning this gluten-free tortilla is for you!

Being from New England, I grew up on fish & chips from the corner restaurant for a quick and easy meal. I never had a burrito until I visited my older sister in San Francisco while she was attending college.  And this experience was one that I will never forget.

Burritos in San Francisco have a cult-like following. On every street corner in the Mission District, are tiny, family-owned burrito shops, called Taquerias, that make the best burritos in the world. Each burrito made is packed with love and good, fresh food.

These burritos are one of the things I miss the most since going gluten-free.

And since being gluten-free I have learned that you have to take eating Burritos, literally, into your own hands. And this, my fellow burrito loving amigos, is where Maria & Ricardo’s gluten-free tortillas come into play!

The Maria & Ricardo gluten-free tortillas are soft, pliable and perfect for making gluten-free burritos, soft tacos, or quesadillas at home. Also Dairy-Free, Vegan, Corn-Free, Kosher, and non-GMO –  these  tortillas are made with sorghum, potato and tapioca flours. These gluten-free rounds-of-joy are great for stuffing, wrapping and rolling – including your favorite sandwich fillings too… turkey, ham, steak & cheese.YUM!

But Maria & Ricardo’s wants to discover and learn more about what all of us gluten-free folks are craving when it comes to the world of tortillas and wraps in order to formulate and develop their next round of delicious gluten-free products. (How wonderful that a company actually wants to hear from us – and ask us exactly what we want!)

How can you WIN?
EASY!

To enter this WIN-It-Wednesday series on BeFreeForMe.com and have a chance of winning one of the FIFTY (yes… 50!) WIN-It-Wednesday: Goodie Bag from Green Valley Organic Lactose-Free Dairy Products

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Know how you meet new people and you like them immediately? You feel a connection. You know that you’re both on the same page. Care about the same things. And have the same likes, interests and shared missions?

Well, this is the way I felt about the folks from Green Valley Organics when I met them at a large trade show this past year. This woman owned and operated business had a team at their trade show booth that were passionate about what they do, the products they make and the commitment to their consumer. Consumers like you and me… on gluten-free and/or lactose-free diets.

The product? Lactose-free dairy products. Yes folks, REAL DAIRY products that are lactose-free. Creamy. Rich. Real honest to goodness dairy. Because of this passionate team at Green Valley Organics, everyone that is gluten/ lactose free can now peacefully enjoy… and love… top-notch dairy products.

No wonder Green Valley Organics tag line is “Peace. Love. Dairy.”

All the Green Valley Organic products are also gluten-free, soy-free, kosher and packed with their own proprietary blend of probiotics.  I love that the products are certified humane and organic too.

Green Valley Organics makes a whole line of products including several varieties of yogurt in 6-ounce cups (Honey, Blueberry, Vanilla, Strawberry, Peach their newest flavor, and Plain) and a  24-ounce family size (Honey, Vanilla and Plain), Sour Cream (YES! Lactose Free Sour Cream! Helloooo Baked Potato) and Kefir (which comes in a Plain variety or the new and yummy Blueberry Pom Acai). My favorite yogurt flavor is the Strawberry… Creamy, rich and just sweet enough, I found myself scraping the sides and bottom of the cup for more. It was just that good. But honestly.. the lactose-free sour cream is to die for. The show stopper. It is rich, creamy – the real deal – but free of lactose. Perfect as a dip, or blended into sauces or soups. And with its Creme Fraiche  sweetness, it is also perfect dolloped over fresh berries for breakfast or dessert.

This is why I was thrilled when I found out that this WIN-It-Wednesday on BeFreeforMe.com was going to be sponsored by the good folks over at Green Valley Organics.

And the prizes are awesome!

A total of FOUR (Yes…4!)  BeFreeForMe members will be selected to win an Insulated eco-friendly tote bag filled with the Green Valley Organics Lactose Free product line of organic yogurts, kefirs and sour cream, a “Peace Love & Dairy” t-shirt and bumper sticker. SO – make sure you enter two times to win!

Chinese New Year was this week, and if you’re like many celiacs and those on a gluten-free diet it’s can be a  bummer not to be able to enjoy a traditional feast with family & friends at your local Chinese restaurant.

Thanks to Laura B. Russell, everyone on a gluten-free diet can now enjoy these Asian favorites at home, and can find the recipes in her cookbook,  “The Gluten-Free Asian Kitchen – Recipes for Noodles, Dumplings, Sauces, & More”. Talk about good fortune!

Every page of this cookbook features a recipes that “I just have to try” with instructions that are easy to understand, along with basic prep and cooking techniques. No more bland “Steamed Chicken & Veggies” for me – the only thing I can eat at my local Chinese restaurant.

WIN-It-Wednesday: Jamieson Direct Probiotics Gift Pack… Plus a FREE Teleseminar!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

With the New Year here  it seems that everyone is chatting about better health and overall wellness. But besides getting regular exercise, and watching every single gluten-free morsel we eat, is there anything else we can do?

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to learn as much as I can about increasing my overall wellness. I actually carry a notebook and have been making note of things to research, things to discover more about, that will increase my overall health.  One of the things I jotted down last week was “probiotics”. What are they? How do they help celiacs? What is the best way to get them – by food, or by supplements? And (the one that I have trouble understanding) if probiotics are bacteria how could that possibly be a good thing?!

That is why I was thrilled when Jamieson Direct, a manufacturer of quality natural healthy products for over 50 years,  and the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness or the NFCA  (I love this organization!) contacted BeFreeForMe to let us know they were having a teleseminar  regarding probiotics and their role in gastrointestinal health… including the gluten-free diet, IBS, celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

This is a live seminar (which means I can ask all my questions!) and it will be hosted by Dr. Daniel Leffler, a world-renowned gastroenterologist and celiac disease expert, who is also the Director of Clinical Research at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and on the faculty at Harvard Medical School (many of us may know him from his speaking engagements at national celiac conferences or from the book he authored, Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting & Thriving Gluten Free) and Shelley Case, a registered dietitian who is a leading international expert on gluten-free nutrition and celiac disease, the author of  The Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide, and member of the Medical Advisory Boards of the Celiac Disease Foundation and Gluten Intolerance Group in the United States and the Professional Advisory Board of the Canadian Celiac Association (many of us know her from her Ask Shelley Case columns on BeFreeForMe.com).

The seminar will take place on Wednesday, February 1 , 2012 from  8pm – 9:30pm ET. It is free to attend, but the spaces are limited, so make sure that you sign-up soon.

Ten lucky participants of the teleseminar will be randomly selected to win a gift pack containing Dr. Leffer’s book, Real Life with Celiac Disease: Troubleshooting & Thriving Gluten Free), Shelley Case’s book, The Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide, and a 2-Month supply to Jamieson Probiotics.

But… the BeFreeForMe.com members are a lucky, lucky, lucky crowd. We have a sneak peak to win the gift packs on this WIN-It-Wednesday blog!

Here is the scoop…

One (1) winner will be randomly selected to win a gift pack that is mentioned above from the replies / entries received on this blog post before Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 11:59 PM EST, and one (1) more winner will be randomly selected to win from the replies / entries received between Wednesday, January 18 and Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:59PM. SO – make sure you enter two times to win!

How can you win?
Easy!

Reply to this blog and let us know your commitment to stay “well” this new year  (Me? #1. – I will never skip a breakfast in 2012 and; #2. – I will try to keep things “simple” to keep the stress levels down !)
