Win-It-Wednesday: “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease?” by Katie Chalmers
If you have a child in your life that has celiac disease there is a perfect book for gifting this Holiday season: “Mommy, What is Celiac Disease?” by Katie Chalmers.
Explaining celiac disease and the gluten-free diet to kids can be tough. That is why this book is a god-send. This one-of-a-kind book is gracefully & eloquently written by a Mom who has celiac disease. Both the author, Katie Chalmers and her daughter, Morgan, were diagnosed with celiac disease a little over 5 years ago. Since that time they have learned to embrace, and make the best, out of living gluten-free, and they share their experiences and sunny outlook in this kid-friendly book. (Looking for more inspiration? You need to check out Katie’s blog!)
Katie’s book encompasses what celiac disease is and what the gluten free diet requires in language that children can understand, all the while encouraging dialogue for additional questions. A must-have for any child with celiac disease, this book is also a must-read for any elementary school story hour that has child with celiac disease in the classroom… making it also a perfect gift for teachers that they can use year-after-year.
I love that “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease?” empathizes the positive, rather than the negative, attributes of a gluten-free diet. However, in no way does this book sugar-coat this disease. Instead “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease?” puts a positive spin on a serious subject that many children may find difficult to understand and accept.
All these reasons are why I am so very excited that “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease?” by Katie Chalmers is this WIN-It-Wednesday sponsor on BeFreeForMe.com.
A total of two (2) BeFreeForMe members will be selected to win a copy of “Mommy, What is Celiac Disease?” One winner will be randomly selected from the entries received before Tuesday, November 25, 2012 at 11:59 PM EST, and another winners will be randomly selected to win from the entries received between Wednesday, November 26 and Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 11:59PM. Reply to this blog and let us know who you would give this book too if you won OR how you look at the sunny side of being gluten-free. (Me? I have met so, so, so many awesome people because of my celiac diagnosis, and I also find myself eating more fruits and vegetables which has resulted in discovering local farmers markets and expanding my own backyard garden).
Good luck, Keep the sunny side up… and as always,

This is wonderful to help a child and I know several who would benefit. I heard of one boy who took his book to school and the teacher read the book to the students and now they are on board to help him and the mothers bring his special GF items then they bring treats

I would donate the book to our local elementary school guidance office so that she could share it with the children when she does classroom lessons. It’s not easy for kids to understand and thru the school would touch a lot of kids.

I would read it to my daughter who is 3. She was diagnosed with celiac a year ago. I would love something to help me explain why she does not eat the same foods as her friends at daycare and why the she is so familiar with the words not gluten free when I explain she can not eat something. It might help the long journey ahead of us. Especially since no one any either one of our families have celiac and it’s sometimes Hard for us to explain with not alot of experience

This book would be a great gift to give to my sister that has celiac disease. It would be a great book she could read to her children to give them an easier way for them to understand why their mommy has to eat differently from them and what celiac disease is in the eyes of a child.

I would give it to my son to share with his class. The kids have been so supportive of him since learning of his celiac last year. Makes me happy!

I would donate to our local elementary school for the guidance counselor to share with classes there. It is helpful for young children to understand food choices and the reasons behind them.

I definitely would love to give this to my daughter, so she can share it with her class, her dance group, and her Girl Scout Troop. I love the fact that someone wrote a book about Celiac Disease, at a kid appropriate level…so it is something a child can understand, and feel there are other people out there like them. They are not alone. My daughter has been through heck and back, at school because of her health. We have fought a hard battle to get where we are.

I would share this with family and friends who wonder why there’s no gluten in our house. My 12 yr old son w/ celiac disease gets it but I’m not sure others do!

I would give the book to my 5 yr old daughter who has Celiac. It would also be helpful to share with family members who still do not understand the disease.
