WIN-It-Wednesday: Shelley Cases New Book (PLUS… a bonus FREE teleseminar with Shelley!)

After getting diagnosed with celiac disease I had tons of questions. Some of the questions I “figured out” for myself by searching the internet and reading books, such as the Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide, written by Shelley Case.

But another fantastic way to learn more about the gluten-free diet – from the basics of celiac disease, ways to manage a new diagnosis, ideas for new & fresh menu ideas, or to get the comradely support that we all need to get by on a day-to-day basis – is to share and have conversations with others that live the gluten-free lifestyle.

That’s why I was thrilled when I heard that GlutenFreeSnacksForMe.com and riceworks is sponsoring a teleseminar featuring a Q&A session with Shelley Case. (Note: A teleseminar is a discussion conducted via the telephone during which Shelley will answer questions emailed to her.)

Shelley’s book a “Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide” has been my bible since I was diagnosed with celiac disease years ago. Shelley’s knowledge on celiac disease, real-life solutions to the obstacles I’ve faced, and her no-nonsense approach to explaining the ins-and-outs of the gluten-free diet has made her book the go-to with all my gluten-free questions.

And to think now we can all have Shelley’s (who is also a registered dietician!) one-on-one’s attention to answer all of our questions “in person” is so very awesome!

The teleseminar, Gluten Free Diet: What Everyone Needs to Know!”  is scheduled for this coming Monday night, August 31st at 8:30 PM EST.

When I emailed Shelley to find out the details on this teleseminar, I also asked if she wanted to donate a couple of her best selling books, “Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide”  for this week’s WIN-It-Wednesday, since it was such a popular giveaway a few months back. So – the prize this week are TWO copies (one copy for two winners) of the newest edition of the “Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide”.

  1. Melissa Brown Says:

My daughter and several of my friends children have been recently diagnosed and this imposes several challenges that most adults don’t face:
How do you eat gluten free and GAIN weight?
What kid friendly suggestions to you have besides buying every GF bread out there until you find one they’ll eat with peanut butter and jelly? My 2 year old has only liked about half of what I’ve offered her, and unlike an adult who will suffer through the rest of the package, I’m wasting expensive food.

  2. Cathy S Says:

Wow! What a great prize! I always feel as though I may be missing a piece of the puzzle when it comes to my health since being on the diet. Now my oldest son has been diagnosed and it seems my youngest grandson (only 20 months old) will be next. This book could help the entire family be healthier, and start the little one off on the right foot.
Thank you for all the wonderful information you provide each and every day!

  3. kristina herrick Says:

I would love this book. There is alwasy something more to learn when you have celiac. This is on my list of books and I just have not gotten to the book store yet.. Thank you

  4. kathie mongaraz Says:

How can I adjust my gluten-free diet to give me enough thiamin, B-vitamins AND stay away from foods that are higher on the glycemic index, in order to maintain a healthy weight ? (I gained a lot of weight, when I went on the gluten-free diet, and my energy level has dropped, I am losing hair)

  5. marie aromando Says:

I am trying to find out information about eating Thai foods in restaurants. What is safe and what is not. Thank you

  6. Kristine Says:

It would be more of a medical question I presume, but I was wondering what she thinks triggers it? I was in my 30’s and had already been diabetic for 20 + years and had had 2 heart attacks. I had already crafted my diet to meet the dietary needs for a diabetic/heart patient and was really surprised to all of a sudden start having “celiac symptoms” that were supposedly unrelated to the aforementioned or pre-existing conditions.

  7. Jenn Says:

Is it a good idea for people who have celiac disease and that they purchase gluten free mixes from stores instead of creating their own verisons of the same products at home?

  8. Lisa Durene Says:

I think I would ask Shelley, what is the most important lesson you have learned so far about being gluten free?

  9. Leslie Hart Says:

I would like to ask Shelley how many people with celiac also have issues with animal dairy products like me.

  10. Michie Page Says:

What do you think is the least known fact about Celiac Disease?

  11. Marina Says:

I also have Crohn’s disease, which limits my ability to absorb B-12, iron and Vit K. I also have to be careful to not eat too many raw vegetables, dairy or fat (not digested well). I’m wondering if she has any advice for people who have both Crohn’s and celiac.

  12. Sandra Rieser Says:

I was diagnosed in 1976 when so little was known, the only guideline was NO wheat, rye, oats, barley, buckwheat. No alcoholic beverages but rum, tequila, wine and brandies. So much has been researched and learned over these 33 years, I really need more up-to-date information across the board. I would ask Shelley her opinion on the ‘new’ oats, which I am fearful of trusting and what other old ideas may have been altered along the way. Thanks for this opportunity, Social Security check alone doesn’t let me buy all the new materials out there.

  13. SARAH Says:

This would be great for me. I am the last of several of my family members to be diagnosed with Celiac’s disease. I have found out a lot of information on my own but have specific questions. And any information I get from the book/seminar would be passed on to all the members of my family. It would be suge a huge help.

  14. Betsy Says:

I would love to read her book. I’ve had celiac for about 10 years now so I’m pretty familiar with the ins-and-outs of how to handle it, but I would love to know if she has any new insight or recommendations.

    Thanks!

  15. Paula Says:

My son has Autism, and we have him & the rest of the family on a Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free diet. I’m concerned about not getting enough of the B vitamins that are found in wheat based foods, and nutrients commonly connected with milk. Should I be concerned, and how do I find supplements that are not only Gluten-Free, but also Dairy-Free?

  16. Liz S. Says:

Having been diagnosed with celiac by several alternative health providers but not my Western doctor (who unfortunately only wanted to give me drugs for other conditions), I would love to hear from Shelley what she thinks the future is for diagnosing people with celiac disease and gluten intolerance. It would be great if there were some sort of test that is more conclusive than what is available now.

  17. Sherall Cornwell Says:

I understand Celiac’s is an autoimmune disorder. I have tested negative for autoimmune disorders. (My mother has RA and SLE Lupus.) I tried the gluten-free diet to see if my headaches would go away and they have! I end up with severe migraines if I do eat something with gluten in it. Would gluten intolerance show up as an allergy or disorder? Thank you!

  18. Susan C - AZ Says:

I would ask Shelley what’s the best food or recipe she has created or discovered since becoming gluten-free? Note to Melissa Brown, if you want to get the BEST tasting bread in the WORLD, then check out glutenfreecreations.com It is a certified gluten-free bakery facility with the best baked goods in the world. They have 28 different delicious breads. They are located in Phoenix, AZ and ship nationwide. I love their cheddar cheese bread, the multi-grain multi-seed bread and the Italian Herb bread. Check it out! Yummo!

  19. Melissa Conrad Says:

I would like t ask Shelley how she deals with enviornmental factors. For example: Going to a bakery where there is flour in the air or wheat flour being used in fertilizers etc. How do you deal with these situations? Living life to the fullest without living in fear of the gluten. Also, How do you go about living with people/being married to someone who isn’t gluten free?

    Thanks!
    Melissa

  20. Susette Says:

Aloha, I am having a problem with high triglycerides on this diet. Do you have any suggestions? My internist has threatened to put me on meds, but I am very chemically sensitive and cannot tolerate meds, even antibiotics. I really need help with this. What can I do? I won’t be able to listen to the program because I live in Hawaii and will be at work at the time the program is broadcast. Another thing that I am having difficulty with is that many, many companies that have gluten free products will not ship to Hawaii. 🙁 Would you know which companies ship to Hawaii? Mahalo

  21. Alice Says:

Even after being a celiac for over 20 years, diagnosed as an adult, I always benefit from further information and resources.. all improving since I first found out I had to adhere to a gluten free lifestyle! What in her opinion, are areas which celiacs are not as aware or sensitive to being watchful for gluten contamination?

  22. Krista Says:

Hi – I’m wondering if Shelley has any tips or advice for traveling internationally? I have found great resources for US destinations, but have been hesitant to vacation to other countries where I’m not familiar with gluten free options. Thanks!

  23. debra taylor Says:

For Krista – go to celiactravel.com and download the gluten-free travel cards that translate the explanation of celiac diet in every language. It was fantastic for us when we took a med cruise, visited Italy, Croatia, Spain, France, and Greece with no problems with food!! I also use them domestically when at Thai, Chinese, Mexican, etc. restaurants. People really pay attention and want to help.

My question is: I know about soy sauce, tvp, fake crab, malt, dextrin – but are there other names to watch out for hidden sources of gluten?

  24. Carol Asher Says:

I would be very happy to read Shelly Case’s book and to share it with our local Celiac Support Group.
I try to read all the latest books about Celiac Disease and gluten and other allergies and and to share with the members what I have learned. I also share with my daughter and my 6 year old grandson who are also on a GF diet.

My question would be: What is the best way to handle lunches and snacks while my grandson is in school, especially elementary grades? And the best way to approach the school personnel when they do not currently have a program for GF lunches?

  25. Cathy Says:

I would have so many questions to ask…..but I think the most important to me is knowing about the effects of a GF Diet while pregnant (will my baby receive enough nutrients while I’m on a GF Diet). I also think that Krista’s response was a good and I would be very curious about international travel as I am about to head to Europe for a month.

  26. Tina Says:

If the blood test was negative, but the gluten-free diet works – is it safe to assume celiac disease is the diagnosis? OR should further testing be done to rule out any other disease that mimics celiac disease?

  27. Cindy Winther Says:

There seems to be a lot of controversy about whether it is safe to use oats even if purchased from a company that says they are gluten free. I would like to know Shelley’s thoughts on the oats controversy. Thank you.

  28. Rhonda Says:

I am wondering if Shelley has any opinion on the trial studies of ALV003 being conducted as a possible treatment for celiac disease? I could also use any additional advice on wines and gluten. I have seen conflicting information from GF list that label all wines as safe to detailed discussions on contamination issues from sealing barrels with a flour/water paste and list of certain wines or parts of the country that usually do not use this process. Thanks!

  29. Giovanna Says:

Now 8 months into Cooking and Shopping for my husband who was diagnosed with Celiac’s in January, my question would be why is this disease not recognized by insurance companies? The breads alone are at least double the cost of regular gluten filled products and they are always much smaller. If meds were available the insurance companies would cover part of the cost. Also, would love pointers on keeping weight in check and cholesterol too! I would love to be the lucky winner for I am sure this book would be a great help. Good Luck to all and may the day/evening be kind, productive and healthy for all.

    Giovanna

  30. Terry Says:

I am so tired of trying to read the labels on all of the packages. The tinitiny print that you need a magnifying glass to see. Cary a book around the store and the grocery shopping trip takes 3 xx as long. There has to be an easier way. How about something that can be downloaded on my Palm phone and you do a search. It sounds better than carrying a book around.

  31. Deanna Says:

I am recently diagnosed and have found I feel so much better when I avoid gluten. However, due to hidden gluten in so many items it is not easy. I guess my question would be: I was told my allergy response was 65% and that normal was 13-15%, but my doctor said I don’t have celiac’s disease. Do I have an allergy to gluten, or a sensitivity? And should I follow a strictly GF diet?

  32. Cindy Says:

I am newly diagnosed so I have too many questions to mention!

  33. Karen Says:

How do you eat gluten-free and still be a vegetarian?

  34. Carole Says:

I have several questions too…… what follow-up care do I need? The doctor just told me to stop eating gluten and call if I had any problems. Is it really that simple? Also, what is an easy-to-understand explanation of the difference between a food allergy and celiac disease? I would love this book!!!

  35. Rachel Says:

I have seen Shelley Case in person, and was in a class she had taught once. She really explained things in a new light. I have been diagnosed for 7 years now. I really would enjoy to read Shelly’s book. But the one question I would ask her is ‘What is your position on the companies that create gluten free products but are also creating wheat filled products? Would you patronize a company that is making only one gluten free product, when they are making over a hundred other products that have non-gluten free ingredients in them?’

  36. Amanda U. Says:

I would love to ask for tips when traveling gluten-free like what are some of the best gluten-free travel destinations?
