Chicago Tribune Finds Dozens of Products Labeled Incorrectly for Allergens; Whole Foods Pulls “Gluten Free” Items
The Chicago Tribune exposed many supermarkets, gourmet shops and bakeries selling items with misleading labels touting a gluten free or allergen free claim during a recent review of thousands of items from 60 locations. They also conducted 50 tests on food products to verify exact ingredients.
Whole Food Market recently pulled three popular Wellshire Kids brand “gluten free” items off their shelves – Dinosaur Shapes Chicken Bites, Chicken Corn Dogs and Beef Corn Dogs – all of which contained 116 to 2,200 parts per million (ppm) of gluten when tested by The Chicago Tribune. Most experts agree that “gluten free” items contain less than 20 ppm.

This situation exemplifies the need for the Food & Drug Administration to complete the second phase of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) and mandate that all food manufacturers are required to meet the same standard for labeling products as gluten free.
